ChrisRinglandShiraz1996Chris Ringland Shiraz is an exceptionally rare wine from the Barossa Valley in Australia. Only 80-100 cases are produced each year from seven acres of vines on rootstock which is over 100 years old. Chris bought the land in the early 1990s and set about restoring his prized Shiraz vineyard with meticulous care.

At 1500 feet above sea level, his vines produce concentrated, yet elegant Australian Shiraz. As the deadly vine disease phylloxera never reached South Australia, Ringland’s vines survive on their own roots, which enable them to attain a great age, while still remaining productive. As the most senior vines begin to decline, they are rejuvenated with younger growth material through the ancient technique of layering, thereby ensuring that the original root systems are maintained.

The 1996 exhibits a stunningly complex nose of cassis, coffee, graphite and meaty savoury notes accompanied by violet aromatics. It is astonishingly concentrated on the palate, yet boasts impeccable balance; multilayered waves of black fruit, smoke and peppery spice are supported by perfectly integrated tannins, acidity and oak, and the finish lasts well over a minute. This is a massive, rich (and alcoholic) wine, however it is never heavy, and in fact displays an elegance that I had not anticipated. An exceptionally rewarding wine which by its nature encourages discussion, questions and sometimes disagreement, and to my mind that is what makes it great!
