The Mirror on Wine Conman

It is unusual to see any one in the media take such a strong stance on an individual, but the Mirror has on wine con man Stephen Boyd.

We called Stephen Pierre Boyd a habitual con man when we wrote about him seven years ago and nothing’s changed since.

His operations Boington & Fredericks and The Wine Index conned investors into paying hugely inflated prices for plonk and in 2006 Boyd was banned from running companies for 13 years.

But he carried on the same scam with Wine Traders International Limited by using fake names including Steve Gordon and Dave Martin, and wine with a value of £2million bought by investors never materialised.

Company spending of £3million could not be accounted for and, in addition, a large quantity of the company’s stock was transferred to “Bradshaw & Karr” – a fictitious corporate entity created by Boyd.

Boyd, 55, from West London, has now been barred from being a director for another 15 years – the maximum ban.

One wonders if barring as a director is adequate in this case.
